About
I was born in 1961, in England, to an American father and British mother. I spent most of my childhood in England and moved to the U.S. permanently in 1973. I studied printmaking at the Kansas City Art Institute, graduating in 1986. I was hired by Hallmark Cards soon after, and have worked in their creative department for many years.
I have been painting professionally since 1990. In the beginning, I painted only in egg tempera, emulating the favorite artists of my youth. Tempera is a demanding technique dating back to the Ancient Greeks that utilizes egg yolks as a binder for pigment painted on wood panels.
For the last 25 years, I have worked in oils, which allow me greater freedom than the rigors of tempera. My focus for much of that time was in interpreting the Midwest with an approach to clouds, storms, and landscape that was rooted in both the real and the surreal worlds. But for the last five years, I have pursued a more thorough exploration of color, and time, through abstract paintings. I combine the paint application techniques learned from my tempera days with the flowing vibrancy and flexibility of oil, creating meticulous compositions of interweaving hatch marks that capture a span of time in a colorful and personal way. The process is meditative, and the result feels evocative.
My collectors include H&R Block, The Overland Park Convention Center, FORVIS, KU Medical Center, United Missouri Bank, St. Luke’s Medical Center, Missouri State Governors Officeand private collectors throughout the United States.
